In a nutshell

I will be adding videos, pictures and links to some of my work, but in the meantime here is a rundown of my cv.

Previous Employment

Sky Social Media Intern

Generating content for and driving traffic towards the Sky 1 website. My main duties include monitoring and updating the website and using social media to engage new audience members. Writing stories about the shows and cast members, selecting photographs for galleries and producing captions to support show sites using some basic html. Working as a part of a small team using Final Cut Pro, Twitter, Facebook, content management systems and Photoshop to produce a sticky website audiences will want to recommend. I have been a producer during live shows, conducting interviews and putting content on site and in real time and under extreme time constraints. I have also been solely responsible for the mobile site and iPhone app.

Broadcast Journalist, BBC Radio Manchester

Working across news and programmes my responsibilities included finding original stories, researching and booking guests and obtaining quotes. I started working as a freelance Broadcast Journalist following a successful work experience placement. On air I had to hold my own with the presenters including Heather Stott and Alan Beswick at Breakfast. I also produced packages for the news, interviewing and scripting my pieces on location, editing them on Radioman and ensuring they were cued ready for air. Keen eye for detail, and attention to the technical as well as the creative side of news means my pieces were always ready on time. I gained a knowledge of the BBC systems; I am familiar with ENPS, Radioman and Outlook. I am also used to working within the studio, answering calls and putting them through, connecting ISDN calls and responding to the ever-changing nature of live radio. I work quickly and I am always happy to learn new operating systems and programmes.

Junction Management, ITV Yorkshire

Working as part of the scheduling team I was responsible for finishing schedules and all final checks before sending the completed information to the relevant transmission site both electronically and in hard copy. Working as part of a tight team while liaising with colleagues across different offices and transmission centres, I always developed and maintained good working relationships inside the office and out.

I also spent some time working in the ITV archive, working to supply material to many different parts of the company and with some responsibility for the news archives. I ensured material was correctly catalogued and was presented in a timely manner when needed. This also meant a great deal of organisation and problem solving if material was missing.

Training & Experience

MA Multimedia Broadcast Journalism, University College Falmouth

During my training at Falmouth I became highly proficient at producing news for the internet, television and radio; from sourcing original stories to researching, recording and editing them. I can create short bulletins or longer features. I also gained experience of tailoring any news bulletin, package, or web page to the correct audience. I used appropriate language and presentation to make sure any piece looked and sounded right and fitted in with other programming

As well as working in a large team I also self produced packages for TV, radio and the Internet; producing stories from starting the research to finishing the edit. I self shot packages for television about Comic Relief and the demise of Westcountry News. I worked to tight deadlines to supply scripts and present on all three platforms, and worked in a multi-media newsroom where stories, images and audio were shared so that every story could be told in different forms and across different platforms. I have extensive experience using Avid and the course’s law training means I am fully aware of legal restrictions and compliance issues on reporting and court reporting.

I took a three day hostile environment course as an addition to the MA. This concentrated on conflict zones but increased my confidence in going into any dangerous area, in the UK or abroad. I also gained a First Aid certificate.

Work experience, Calendar Newsroom, ITV Yorkshire

Whilst employed at ITV Yorkshire I secured work in the newsroom during weekends and vacations. I shadowed journalists and helped with interviews and scripting on a number of stories. I frequently researched new stories and set up interviews, putting the required calls in to the emergency services and other contacts.

The first story I covered was the floods in the summer of 2007 when vast parts of Yorkshire flooded and hundreds of people were forced from their homes. I also interviewed a Bradford councillor over proposals to change a local landmark into an office block and hotel. At the Harrogate Flower Show I went out with a cameraman, getting vox and interviewing one of the organisers. I scripted and helped edit the final piece before it appeared on that day’s bulletin.

At the Coroners Court I helped interview the teacher and family of a 12 year old boy who died as a result of an accident at home. This was one of the hardest assignments I was given, but an excellent opportunity to see how the court works and how to carry myself in a difficult situation.

I worked as a production assistant for several broadcasts, which gave me a full picture of everything going on in a newsroom, from research to transmission.

I have a full clean British driving license.
